Set in an alternate reality of turn of the century London, where the church and the state are one, Kerrick Calloway discovers his wife is a heretic. He now faces a choice between his duty to the church he serves and his love for his wife. In an effort to keep her away from a church which would submit her to prosecution over her heresy, he rushes her away from London. 

During the process, they both begin to develop mental abilities forbidden by the church, which will put them both in danger. An unexpected source directs them to escape to Wales, where they will be safe for the moment. But the church has long arms and wants Kerrick back. How long can they remain safe?
