I wanted to tell a human story behind the headlines—to show how war, the collapse of a country, and broken families shape people's choices. This novel doesn’t excuse crime, but it does try to understand the people behind it: individuals whose lives were rerouted by war, a wrecked economy, corruption, and a society coming apart.

This is the first book in a trilogy that explores how the Pink Panthers emerged from the chaos of Yugoslavia’s breakup. It also pulls back the curtain on the diamond industry itself—from bloody civil wars in mining countries to the corporate and political systems that profit from it.
